What is an internship?
An Internship is a practical program where international students or recent graduates are placed in local companies, to undertake paid or unpaid work experience, relevant to their skills and qualifications. Our Intern's skills and experience are matched specifically to the needs of our Host Company.
How long are internships?
As each Internship is specifically tailored to the needs of the Host Company and the Intern, the length of Internship varies, however as a guide, most Internships run for approximately 8 weeks.
Are interns paid?
That depends on you. VI has both paid and unpaid programs. The most widely used of our programs is the unpaid internship.
Why would interns work for free?
Internships are not a new concept, in Europe Internships are a recognized part of the educational system. This is the natural progression from university to the workplace and it is not uncommon for a person to undertake 2 or 3 Internships during and immediately after their studies. Employers therefore have many positions available for Interns all year round and utilise the Internship concept so as to have a continual stream of new ideas and knowledge flowing through their Company and students want to undertake Internships to give themselves an edge.
What English level do the interns have?
All Interns have a proficient level of English, with many being fluent in a number of languages.
Are the interns insured?
Yes, all are required to hold valid medical insurance as a condition of their stay in Canada. In addition WCB is covered under their school's plan. WCB numbers are available upon request.
